ABOUT STEPHANIE PHILIPS

As a 28-year resident of Stratford's "South End," I know all the good things about our neighborhood. There's a great sense of community in this area. We have beautiful tree-lined streets, where many families show their pride with good-looking homes and apartments. Accordingly, we are very proud that our community is very diverse with all ethnicities and backgrounds. I also know my district's issues, and as a long-time community activist, I have heard their concerns.

My Commitment to you is that I will give a positive voice to our community; that I will work with all members of the Town Council to forge a true coalition to move the town forward; and that I will address your issues of concern: the flooding, the roads, town services, blighted properties, educational equity, police patrols, and tax stabilization when I am elected to the Town Council from the second district. In addition, I will continue our success to enhance recreational programs, renovate our facilities, and show our pride with concerts and neighborhood activities.

What I love about the South End

Within walking distance, we have the South End Community Center and Birdseye Complex. The Birdseye Complex has recently been renovated with a new kid's playground, a walking path, a new high school size basketball court; plus a completely rebuilt athletic field with (3) softball/youth baseball diamonds, and a multi-purpose football/soccer/lacrosse field.

The South End Community Center building has been freshly painted, with a renovated front entrance, new roof, increased lighting, and a new appealing look. Stratford South End Community Center has a preschool, Food Pantry, WIC, health screening, learning center, and several programs for all ages.

Down the block is Johnson House, which is getting new tennis courts, and a 1-mile running/jogging track. We are the home of Stratford Academy that is the Town's only magnet school, which will shortly have a new state of the art 'Honeyspot House' for grade K through 3. We have three parks within walking distance (Juliett Low, the playground on the corner of Columbus Avenue, Gregory Circle), and open space on Meadowview Road.

What I want to improve in the South End

With an emphasis of 'bringing people together for a change', I will work to eliminate the general frustration with a town government that seems paralyzed by partisanship, and bickering. Moreover, to make sure, true or not, that our area receives the same level of services as other parts of Stratford. My priorities will be to address the following issues in our neighborhood:

• Being available, and accessible to listen to my constituents

• Repeated flooding that is not a priority of government

• Educational opportunities we feel are missing for our children

• Speeding that is never addressed

• Concerns about crime and the need for consistent police presence

• Blighted properties that are unaddressed

• Getting most from our taxes
